As director of the Ombuds Service, Stergio envisions it as a collaborative effort between OFCCP and federal contractors. The program is designed to encourage more cooperation, improve communication, and move all parties toward equal employment opportunity. As a step in this direction, OFCCP suggests reaching out to Stergio to “initiate a working relationship.”
Stergio’s goal is ensure a variety of practices and resources are available, such as:
- Informal phone conversations (1-on-1)
- Mediation between stakeholders and OFCCP during disputes
- Training and workshops for conflict resolution
- In-depth conflict coaching and strategy sessions
- OFCCP and stakeholder facilitation
- Implementing other dispute resolution systems
- Referring to other resources inside or outside DOL
The Ombuds service aims to enhance the implementation of compliance assistance. Stergio sees this as feasible through conflict resolution as a resulting of addressing concerns in the contractor community. OFCCP is encouraging referrals from all types of stakeholders:
- Federal contractors and subcontractors
- Contractor representatives
- Law firms and industry groups
- Worker rights organizations
- Potential and current employees of contractors/subcontractors
- Complainant
