Most organizations have a crisis plan. Far fewer can show how that plan turns into action: who was alerted, who took which task, what the team knew at each point, and what was recorded for the review afterward. In practice that gap is usually a process problem before it is a technology problem. Contacts live in one spreadsheet, plans in another, and the response runs over text threads and conference bridges.
Crisis management software closes that gap. It gives response teams a way to activate from a plan, alert the right people, share a common picture of the event, and keep a record of decisions. Platforms differ most in where they start: some begin with continuity planning, some with mass notification, and some with emergency operations.
This guide compares six platforms, grouped by three use cases: planning to response, employee alerting and threat monitoring, and emergency operations and field coordination. Within each group the vendors are listed in no particular order. Mitratech makes one of the six, Mitratech Preparis, and we have applied the same criteria to every platform. Mitratech was named a Leader in the 2026 QKS Group SPARK Matrix for Business Continuity and Operational Resilience Management.

What are crisis management tools?
Crisis management tools are software platforms that help organizations respond when an incident disrupts people, operations, or reputation. They support the work that starts the moment an incident is declared: activating the response team, alerting affected people, assigning tasks, sharing a common picture of the event, and recording what was decided and when.
The category overlaps with several others, which is why buyers often compare very different products. Business continuity management software prepares for disruption with business impact analysis and recovery plans. Emergency notification systems reach people quickly. Incident management platforms coordinate real-time response, often for IT. Crisis management tools sit across these. Some, like Mitratech Preparis, start from continuity planning and add alerting and incident response. Others start from mass notification or emergency operations.
Most crisis management tools offer five core capabilities:
- Multichannel alerting with two-way responses: reaching people by SMS, voice, email, or app, and hearing back from them.
- Activation from existing plans: starting a response from stored plans, templates, or playbooks.
- Team collaboration: a shared space for the response team to assign tasks and exchange updates.
- A shared operating picture: a dashboard, status board, or map that shows everyone the same information.
- A time-stamped record: automatic documentation of actions and communications for after-action review and audits.
Why organizations need crisis management tools in 2026
- Speed and coordination: A response that runs on email chains and phone trees depends on whoever happens to be available. Software activates the right people and tasks from a plan, so the first minutes are not spent working out who should be told.
- Current contact data: An alert is only as good as the contact and location data behind it. Platforms that sync contact data and use dynamic groups reduce the risk of alerting the wrong people, or missing the right ones.
- Plans that stay current: Static documents and spreadsheets fall behind as systems, vendors, and teams change. Continuity platforms keep plans, business impact analysis, and approvals in one place, so the plan a crisis team activates is the current one. See Mitratech’s guide to how continuity management solutions build resilience.
- Dependencies beyond technology: Regulators are asking for more than a technology map. Mitratech’s article on what a business continuity plan has to map beyond technology notes that DORA’s Article 11(5) calls for a business impact analysis that weighs functions, third-party dependencies, and their interdependencies, and that the UK FCA’s 2026 review found firms had mapped systems in more detail than people, processes, and third parties.
- Regulatory expectations: The EU Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA) has applied since January 17, 2025. Article 11 calls for financial entities other than microenterprises to have a crisis management function, and for crisis communication plans to be tested. ISO 22301 sets requirements for business continuity management systems that help organizations continue delivering products and services at an acceptable capacity during a disruption.
- Distributed workforces: Employees in the field, on the road, and at multiple sites need to receive alerts and report their status from whatever device they have.
- Evidence for review: Boards, auditors, and regulators ask what happened and what was done. Time-stamped records of communications and actions make after-action reviews and audits faster and more defensible.
- Earlier warning: Some platforms add threat monitoring, so teams learn about an event near their people or sites before the first report arrives.
Evaluation criteria
We evaluate each platform using the same capability criteria:
- Alert channels: The channels a platform can use to reach people, such as SMS, email, voice, mobile app, desktop, and collaboration tools
- Two-way messaging: Whether recipients can respond, check in, or request help, and whether teams can exchange messages during the event
- Plan-based activation: Whether a response can be started from stored plans, templates, or playbooks
- Shared operating picture: Dashboards, status boards, maps, or event pages that show the same information to the whole team
- Continuity planning and BIA: Whether the platform also supports business impact analysis and recovery plan authoring
- After-action records: Automatic logs, reports, or review tools that document communications and decisions
- Mobile access: Native apps or mobile-ready access for responders in the field
- Pricing transparency: Whether list pricing is published
Our insights are based on publicly available product documentation, vendor websites, and review resources, including G2. Where a vendor does not publish a capability on the pages we reviewed, the matrix shows “Not published” rather than “No.” We did not find list pricing on the vendor pages we reviewed, so pricing is noted per vendor rather than compared.
Product features, metrics, and pricing plans are accurate based on publicly available data as of October 27, 2026.

Why it stands out: D4H says its incident management software is designed to help organizations ensure command, control, and clarity during a crisis event. D4H is now part of EcoOnline, a connected safety and sustainability software company.
Considerations: G2 review summaries note limits in flexibility and advanced features that call for additional training. The app announcement we cite is from 2020, so confirm current mobile features with D4H. Pricing is not published.
Mitratech Preparis in detail
One platform, four capabilities. Mitratech Preparis brings planning, alerting, incident response, and IT recovery together, so teams do not switch tools when a plan is activated.
Plan. Guided business impact analysis, expert BCP, COOP, and EOP templates, and opt-in AI plan review help teams build audit-ready plans. A built-in risk module helps identify and rank threats by location and department, and centralized storage reduces version control issues.
Alert. Emergency alerts reach employees across voice, SMS, email, push, WhatsApp, and RCS, with real-time response tracking and geofencing. Mitratech’s Preparis Alerts page describes advanced notification systems as supporting two-way messaging, targeting by location, role, or department, and records for compliance and post-incident review.
Respond. Tabletop exercises, a virtual war room, and real-time response tracking, with audit-ready records when the incident is over. After an exercise or incident, teams can review corrective actions in the planner and adapt the plan.
Keep plans current. Mitratech’s guide to how continuity management solutions build resilience argues that static documents and disconnected spreadsheets cannot keep up with changing threats, and that business impact analysis works best as a continuous process rather than an annual task. Centralizing documentation, version histories, and stakeholder reviews also makes audits easier.
Map beyond technology. Mitratech’s article on what a business continuity plan has to map beyond technology says plans often map systems in detail but stop short of people, processes, entities, countries, and third parties, a pattern it ties to the UK Financial Conduct Authority’s 2026 review of operational resilience. Mitratech Preparis is designed to keep plans, dependencies, and ownership in one connected record.
Part of a recognized GRC portfolio. Mitratech Preparis connects with Mitratech Enterprise Risk Management for a broader view of organizational resilience. Mitratech’s business continuity and GRC capabilities have been recognized by independent analyst firms:
- Leader in the 2026 QKS Group SPARK Matrix for Business Continuity and Operational Resilience Management.
- Leader and the only Ace Performer in the 2026 QKS Group SPARK Matrix for Governance, Risk and Compliance Platforms, and a 5X winner as a GRC Leader.
- Category Leader in all seven quadrants of the Chartis Integrated GRC 2026 report.
- Ranked #30 in the Chartis RiskTech100 for 2027.
- Named a Technology Provider in the Wheelhouse Advisors IRM Navigator IRM50 for 2026-2027.
How to choose crisis management software
Start with how a crisis response actually runs today. List who gets alerted, through which channels, who declares an incident, and where decisions and tasks are recorded. Then find where the process breaks: contact data that is out of date, plans nobody can find, or a response that leaves no record.
Then pick the use case that matches your operating model:
- Planning to response if you want crisis activation to start from continuity plans you already maintain. Validate how plans, contacts, and alerts connect during an activation, and what evidence of testing the platform keeps.
- Employee alerting and threat monitoring if your first constraint is reaching people quickly in many locations and hearing back from them. Validate channel coverage, two-way responses, location targeting, and how contact data stays current.
- Emergency operations and field coordination if you run a command team with field responders. Validate the shared operating picture, task and resource tracking, mobile access, and the after-action record.
Compare the trade-offs directly: one platform for planning and response versus a specialist tool alongside your continuity software; configurable workspace versus faster time to value; and alerting depth versus response workflow depth. Ask each vendor for a live exercise, not only a demo, and pilot with one business unit or site before a full rollout. Confirm security certifications and data residency with each vendor rather than relying on marketing claims.
If you are also choosing continuity planning software, see our guide to the top business continuity management software solutions.
