February is Black History Month and provides a great time to focus on African Americans in the workplace, especially since many organizations struggle with diversity as supported by the statistics below:
- There are only four black Fortune 500 CEOs all of whom are men (Forbes, 2019)
- For every 100 men promoted to manager, only 60 black women are (Women in the Workplace)
- Only 3.2 percent of executives and senior manager-level employees are African American (Being Black in Corporate America)
- Thirty-eight percent of black millennials say they are considering leaving their jobs to start their own company (Being Black in Corporate America)
These numbers are disturbing especially when you note that companies with higher diversity in management teams can have 19% higher revenue and millennials are on track to make up 75% of the workforce by 2025 (Gallup).
