Tips for Screening Applicants

Finding the right candidate for an opening can be like finding a needle in a haystack. While there is no perfect process, outlined below are three tips for more effective applicant screening :

1. Don’t rely on email and spreadsheets
Fielding resumes in your email one by one, and tracking and sharing feedback within your team through spreadsheets can be a big pain. A lot of online applicant tracking systems allow you to receive and screen applications in an exponentially better way. Post openings and receive resumes in one central place.

2. Search & Filter
Utilize your online tracking system for more than just organizing applications. Make sure you use the search filters to limit and classify resumes that you want to look at more closely. This can be at the form level where you ask the applicant for specific information and/or at the keyword level while searching the resume text.

3. Collaborate
The most time consuming factor while hiring a candidate is getting everyone’s feedback. It’s progressively fast if everyone involved in the interview process is adding their feedback in the same place – to the candidate profile on the tracking system. Not only does this keep everyone on the same page, but also allows them to tailor their interview questions based on the previous person’s feedback.
