During the Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, I want to focus on a famous disability rights advocate, Judy Heumann, in honor of Disability Independence Day on July 26th. Judy Heumann is an internationally recognized leader in the disability community and a lifelong civil rights advocate for disadvantaged people. For more than 30 years, Heumann has been involved on the international front working with disabled people’s organizations and governments around the world to advance the human rights of disabled people.
Below we have shared some interviews and other resources focused on Judy Heumann and Disability Independence day.
- An interview from the Daily Show. Trevor Noah talks to Judy Heumann about her book, her stories, and what disabled people need today. Judy Heumann on the Daily Show.
- Need a little overview of the history of the ADA? Here’s something fun: Drunk History about Judy Heumann’s Fight for Disability Rights.
- I would also recommend checking out her TED Talk – Our fight for disability rights and why we’re not done yet.
- Netflix documentary Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution.
