Celebrate Defending Data Privacy: Happy Identity Management Day!
For data privacy aficionados, April 13, 2021, is now a red-letter day. But when you think about it, we probably all need to be devotees of data privacy and digital security.
That’s the point: The National Cybersecurity Alliance and the Identity Defined Security Alliance (IDSA) have put together the first-ever Identity Management Day. They hope it becomes an annual awareness event on the second Tuesday in April each year.
The idea? Educate business and IT leaders about the importance of data privacy, identity management, and governance, best practices, processes, and technology. There’s a focus on the dangers involved in not taking the right steps in identity management and access control – a bummer to bring up on any other red-letter day, to be sure, but as the article at Security points out:
Research by the IDSA reveals that 79% of organizations have experienced an identity-related security breach in the last two years, and 99% believe their identity-related breaches were preventable. According to the 2020 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report, as many as 81% of hacking-related breaches leverage weak, stolen, or otherwise compromised passwords.
Those breaches, far more often than not, lead to data privacy violations as hackers troll for personal information.
How does operational compliance fit into data privacy?
What’s this got to do with operational compliance? In a word, everything. The kind of slipups that result in identity theft or other digital security violations are often due to errors and oversights caused by poor processes, a lack of clarity or enforcement in policies and procedures, or not having centralized and access-secured repositories for sensitive information. Identity theft is just one of the painful ramifications of not operationalizing digital security and data privacy best practices.

And in case you’re wondering, “why isn’t there a Data Privacy Day?” There is, courtesy of the National Cybersecurity Alliance. But we missed it this year. For 2022, though? We’re already laying in the party hats and mocktails.
